Legally anyone can call themselves an ‘accountant’ without any training or experience. To make the right financial decisions, you need the right advice.
You wouldn't visit a dentist that hadn't had the right training or didn't have any qualifications, so why let someone loose on your accounts and end of year returns that isn't qualified.
A qualified accountant will:
- be a member of a professional accountancy body
- have completed in-depth training
- be committed to continuing professional development training every year to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date
- be bound by a Code of Ethics
- hold a practicing certificate and professional indemnity insurance if they offer professional services to the public
- be subject to review by their professional body thereby upholding and developing the highest professional standards.
When you see an accountant make sure you ask them:
- Are you a qualified accountant?
- Are you a member of a professional accountancy body?
- Do you hold a practicing certificate?
- Do you have professional indemnity insurance?
- Do you offer the services and have the experience I need?
- Are you authorised to do the work that I need?
